TV shows like The Block, are quite entertaining to watch. However, some people gain misconception of the time frame it takes for one to build a house. For example it does not take four, five or six weeks but to build a quality home, the process actually takes longer than that, for a good reason, so don’t rush and enjoy the process (easier said than done I know!).
In an ideal world, to draw up plans and build the home, including final checks and handover it should take around 5 months, and that is what some builders will tell you to reel you in. However, even though It does take less time to build a house with an experienced builder because of their vast knowledge, connections and skill set, in the real world, other factors come into play and your home build may take 7 to 8 months maximum, based on building a “well-appointed, quality home” with two storeys.
Factors that affect the length of your home build:
- Site Preparation
- Weather Conditions
- Council and Local Government Permits
- Financial Institutions
- Design Variations
- Power and Plumbing Connectivity
- Finishing Touches (painting, fixture & landscaping)
There is a great deal that goes into a custom-built home and if it is your forever home, don’t rush the process. It’s important to choose a builder who has your best interests at heart, isn’t going to rush into anything and is not going to string you along either. Do your research and allow for variations, nothing can fully prepare you for the process until you have gone through it yourself at least once, so surround yourself with people you can trust and let your dream home become a reality.
